WE have telegraphed to British Minister :-

Opium dealers report have received warning from Kwaugtung_Government
that smoking must cease 31st December. Position becoming critical. Earnestly beg
your Excellency press Chinese Government withdraw proclamation."

We have telegraphed to Peking Minister:
"British consul, Hangchow, informs us that Chekiang authorities have decided to carry out treaty provisions, and would be guided instructions from Peking. Request your Excellency urge Central Government send immediate instructions for withdrawal prohibition and reopening of shops. Please inform Messrs. E. D. Sassoon and Co."
